Leaky Oil Pipeline Causes Minor Traffic Accidents

City and private crews controlled a slow leak from an oil pipeline in Wilmington Monday, but not before it contributed to several minor traffic accidents.

The slow leak in the Wickland Oil Terminals line was noticed when oil bubbled to the surface just before midnight Sunday, said Sgt. Tony Rosa of the Los Angeles Police Department’s Harbor Division. Enough oil oozed up near Pacific Coast Highway and Frigate Avenue to “cause about three minor traffic accidents,” he said. No injuries were reported.

The road was closed briefly as crews worked to patch the leak, he said, adding that about 200 gallons of crude had spilled. Rosa said Pacific Coast Highway was reopened about 2:30 a.m.
