COUNTYWIDE : Sheriff Recruiting New Applicants
The Ventura County Sheriff’s Department is taking applications from people interested in becoming sheriff’s deputies.
Candidates must apply by May 31 to take a written test, the first of several steps to qualify for a spot in the department’s 22-week training academy, authorities said.
Applicants who pass the written test will go through a three-month screening, including a physical agility exam, oral interview, background screening and psychological examination.
About 10% of applicants are accepted to the academy, Sheriff’s Sgt. Mark Ball said, and 60% to 75% of the people who enter the academy graduate, he said.
Department recruiters are targeting ethnic minorities and women, Ball said.
Applicants must be United States citizens and at least 19 years old. They also must have high school diplomas or certificates and valid driver’s licenses.
Trainees in the department make $2,230 a month. Once trainees are sworn in, their salaries range from $2,341 to $3,137 a month plus benefits.
