Soldiers who participated in the Persian Gulf War will be honored at a celebration July 4 at Oxnard Airport.

The Ventura County Board of Supervisors proclaimed the celebration “Operation Homecoming” in keeping with President Bush’s desire to recognize the troops on the holiday.

The free event will run from 1 to 5 p.m. Tickets will be available on a first-come, first-served basis beginning June 11 at participating radio, television and newspaper offices.

More than 1,000 soldiers are expected to be on hand for the event. A military parade and flag presentation are scheduled for 2 p.m. on the airport taxiway.

During the afternoon, military and civilian aircraft will fly over the airport. One group will perform a special formation to honor the soldiers who did not return from the Persian Gulf War, as well as other wars.

The Oxnard Air Show Committee and the Veterans of Foreign Wars are coordinating the event to recognize all veterans, officials said. Veterans arriving at the entry gate will be given identification to wear so that members of the public can personally thank them for their efforts, the organizers said. Food will be provided free to the returning service men and women.

Military service organizations wanting to help with the program should call Jesse Lozano at 982-2265. Businesses or individuals who can help with refreshments should call Fred Baskin at 647-4465.
