$1 Million OKd to Restore Pier

The Ventura City Council has agreed to accept $1 million in state funds to help restore the weathered Ventura Pier and, eventually, to assume ownership of it.
The state, which owns the 119-year-old pier, has agreed to turn the structure over to the city after putting $1 million into the restoration.
The change in deed ownership would make the restoration project eligible for other grants from the Coastal Conservancy and the Wildlife Conservation Board, which would cover the rest of the total $3.5-million cost of the project, said Barbara Harison, Ventura director of parks and recreation.
The $1-million grant from the state Department of Parks and Recreation will allow city contractors to replace 50 to 60 of the pier’s rotted pilings and at least half of the weather-beaten wood deck with new timber.
The nine-month restoration project is scheduled to begin this fall.
