Azusa : Proposal for Motel Rejected
Fearing that another motel will eventually turn into a substandard housing unit, the City Council on Monday denied Econolodge’s proposal to built a 31-unit motel.
The 4-1 vote upheld the decision of the city Planning Commission.
Safety studies ordered by the council April 15 found that the proposed motel on the southwest corner of Foothill Boulevard and Pasadena Avenue “would not have a significant impact” on traffic or safety.
But Roy Bruckner, the city’s director of community development, said the main concern was the financial feasibility of a motel. Because of low occupancy rates, many motels offer units for long-term occupancy, essentially becoming substandard apartments, he said.
Councilman John R. Dangleis, who cast the negative vote, said the owners have a legal right to built a motel in that location.
