A Suggestion to Curtail the Rhetoric

In response to a recent letter by Gar Goodson (Save Our Coastline 2000), (Times, April 28) I would like to make the following observations.

Mr. Goodson expresses a concern that Rancho Palos Verdes, unlike Carmel by the Sea, could grow into a “garish nightmare of a landscape covered with huge hotels, wedding chapels, hamburger stands . . . bumper-to-bumper traffic along inadequate roads that are now at maximum capacity.”

First of all, if we developed ALL the undeveloped property, we could not approach the development level of Carmel, which has more golf courses than we would have room for if we leveled everything and started over.

Secondly, this appears to be a thinly veiled appeal to solicit signatures for a petition to force a recall election on Jacki Bacharach.

Recalls are no way to select city governing bodies unless there has been some criminal activity, and no one is charging any criminality in this case. In fact, Mrs. Bacharach has worked diligently and honestly for our city over many years and should not be subjected to this type of attack from disgruntled losers in our last election. The way to change the makeup of our City Council should be through the normal election process.

Additionally, this whole process would cost our city, that’s us, the taxpayers, something like $75,000, which we can ill afford.

I would suggest that inflammatory rhetoric be curtailed and that we work together to develop our city to its ultimate potential and for the benefit of everyone.
