When director Paul Myers came to Weddington Park two years ago, he noticed that something was missing--children.

“Everyone should be able to use the city parks,” Myers said. “But two years ago, the only people using this place were adults. Right then, I set about trying to get the kids back into the park.”

Although there were children in the area interested in using the gymnasium for youth basketball, nearly every hour the gym was in use was reserved for adult leagues, he said. In a matter of months, Myers had arranged for youth basketball sign-ups as well as a winter and summer day camp and a lunch program for underprivileged children age 18 and younger.

The Toluca Lake Little League program plays on the north side of the park so Myers said it wasn’t difficult to find children interested in participating in the new programs.

“Today, we had to push out a few of the adult programs in order to accommodate the children,” Myers said. “But we have a much more well-rounded park because of it. It’s more of a family park now with something for everyone to get involved in.”
