NATION IN BRIEF : NEW HAMPSHIRE : House OKs Creation of a Rights Holiday
Members of the state House in Concord, N. H., voted to create a paid holiday in honor of civil rights on the same day as the federal holiday for Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., but King’s name was left off the measure. Lawmakers voted, 243 to 105, to establish the holiday on the third Monday in January, the same day that the federal government and 48 states honor King’s Jan. 15 birthday. The Senate must still take action on the bill, and Gov. Judd Gregg has said he will sign it. Arizona and New Hampshire are the only states without a paid holiday for state workers that honors King.
