Most of Maine’s government temporarily shut down Friday under a budget-balancing plan, but prison guards, state police and other essential employees showed up, though they may not get paid for their work for years.

It was the first of two days of shutdowns aimed at helping plug a budget shortfall of nearly $77 million. The next one is set for May 24.

All state employees will forgo pay for the two days until they leave state service. The hundreds of essential employees required to work also will receive compensatory time off.
