Government to Shore Up Dairy Prices: The Agriculture Department announced a temporary program to bolster flagging dairy prices by increasing export subsidies and buying products in advance for the public school lunch program. Dairy prices have dropped more than 25% the past year, and analysts have warned that many farmers could be forced out of business if low prices continue. Under the relief plan, the Agriculture Department also plans to temporarily suspend sales of surplus government stocks of milk and cheese to isolate the stockpile from low market prices.
