BUENA PARK : Council OKs Plans to Redevelop Center

A shopping center at Lincoln Avenue and Valley View Street may soon be getting a face lift under plans recently approved by the City Council.
In a unanimous decision, the council agreed last week to seek developers willing to redevelop the 13-acre site. The commercial center, on the northeast corner of the intersection, is in the city’s redevelopment area.
Two major retailers and several smaller businesses now operate from the center. However, during the last few years several larger businesses, including a bank and Builders Emporium, left the site.
“The existing center has more recently fallen into a state of great disrepair due to the departure of several major tenants,” said a staff report on the proposal. “The center will continue to deteriorate as the existing property owners are unwilling to redevelop the property on their own without a coordinated effort.”
Plans call for the addition of a supermarket, as well as reducing the size of the current Pic ‘N’ Save store.
Council members said they were happy with the plans to refurbish the aging businesses.
“It will clean up and modernize one of the worst-looking strip centers left in the city,” said Councilman Donald L. Bone.
If developed, the project is expected to generate $200,000 a year in sales tax revenue for the city.
