Man Threatens Estranged Wife, Then Kills Himself

A 32-year-old Los Angeles man who threatened to kill his estranged wife and himself unless they were reunited shot himself in the head Thursday after he was wounded in a confrontation with sheriff’s deputies in Rowland Heights, authorities said. Neither the man nor his 24-year-old wife were immediately identified.

Sheriff’s Deputy Mary Landreth said the couple had gone by car from Los Angeles to Rowland Heights, with the man firing several shots through the floor of the car as they drove to an apartment building on Colima Road.

When the couple arrived, the woman bounded out of the car and asked an apartment leasing agent to summon help. A deputy wounded the man as he brandished a gun, Landreth said. After a foot chase, the wounded man turned toward deputies and raised his gun again, she said. The deputies fired, apparently missing, and the man put the gun to his head and fired. He was pronounced dead shortly after 2 p.m.
