Claremont : Compromise on Yard Fill
It’s a dirty job. But thanks to council action, a rural northeast Claremont resident will have an easier time doing it.
In a compromise decision, the council voted unanimously to require Gary Williams to remove half of the 400 cubic yards of dirt fill in the back yard of his Padua Avenue residence. Williams had appealed to the council to reverse a city Architectural Commission ruling that the fill violated landscaping standards.
The grading guidelines are designed to preserve the natural contours and drainage patterns of yards.
Williams said he planned to level the dirt, which was removed from other parts of his property, and create a garden. He said the estimated cost of removing all of the dirt is $2,000 to $3,000.
After receiving staff reports that the yard posed no aesthetic problems, the council agreed to let half of the fill remain.
