Covina : Staff Layoffs Recommended

Share

City Manager John Thomson is recommending cutting 32 full-time staff positions to offset a $2-million budget deficit for the next fiscal year.

Thomson recommended 13% staff reductions in several city departments, including police, fire, community development and engineering. No police officers or firefighters would be affected, Thomson said.

City Council members will review the staff-cutting proposal in its budget discussions in June.

The city has 246 full-time employees. The decreases would slice counter service at City Hall in half and reduce library staff and hours.

The staff cuts would save $1.36 million. In addition, officials expect $100,070 in added revenue, and $600,000 from reserves has already been approved to help offset the deficit caused by the recession and cuts in county and state funding.
