Pasadena : City Workers Get Reprieve
More than 200 temporary city employees got a temporary reprieve from the City Council last week.
Councilman Isaac Richard noted that more than half of the city’s temporary workers are minorities who will lose their jobs when the city projects for which they were hired end.
Sixty-three of the 220 workers are considered “long-term” temporary employees eligible to apply for 27 permanent city jobs now available and for city help in finding other jobs. But the rest will lose their jobs under a city policy limiting temporary employment to one year, City Manager Philip Hawkey said.
The council will discuss the issue June 4. Also scheduled during that meeting is an update on the city’s progress in meeting recommendations of an audit last May by PeopleWorks, a Los Angeles consulting firm. The audit found discrimination against women and minorities in city hiring, promotions and disciplinary practices.
