The accrediting agency for colleges and universities in the South has drafted rules linking schools’ academic accreditation with the integrity of their athletic programs, according to the New York Times. The newspaper said in today’s editions that if the rules are adopted, they would present a potentially powerful weapon in policing college sports. A school that loses its academic accreditation faces crippling consequences, including a cutoff of federal financial aid to students.
