Times staff and wire reports

THAILAND: For the first time, the country has agreed to open government-to-government economic relations with Vietnam, a government spokeswoman said. Thai businessmen have been able to conduct private business with Vietnam, but neither government support nor guarantees have been made available. The spokeswoman said agreements concerning economic promotion and protection are expected to be signed with Vietnam soon. The first will allow the two sides to set up a joint commission to promote trading relations as well as review and resolve economic problems between the countries, she said. The second agreement will concentrate on investment promotion and protection.
