‘Singers’ Salute’ Raises $550,000

* Betty Clooney Foundation for Persons With Brain Injury raised $550,000 at its sixth annual “Singers’ Salute to the Songwriter” benefit concert April 29 at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion. Ray Charles, Bob Hope, Peggy Lee and Carol Channing were among the performers who volunteered their time to aid the facility and its patients.

* Los Angeles Gay and Lesbian Community Services Center’s national art exhibit and sale held May 3, 4 and 5 netted nearly $300,000. The “OUT Auction” sale was conceived and produced by Strub Media Group, headed by Sean Strub. Part of the money will also go to the Woman’s Building.

* KCET’s May 2 “Night to Remember,” sponsored by the Women’s Council, netted more than $200,000. Proceeds will go toward public television programming for Southern and Central California.

* Downtown Women’s Center raised more than $115,000 at the March 12 annual dinner. Director/founder Jill Halverson said that proceeds will go toward ongoing operating expenses.

* Foundation for New American Music netted $15,000 at its May 11 salute to the music of Jules Styne. The foundation was established in 1979 to commission and disseminate symphonic jazz.

* National Kidney Foundation of Southern California held its gala tribute honoring Dr. Charles R. Kleeman April 21 at the Regent Beverly Wilshire. The more than $90,000 in proceeds will be used for patient and research programs.

* St. John’s Hospital and Health Center netted $25,000 at an April 19 fund-raiser sponsored by the Irene Dunne Guild. Proceeds will go toward cancer research and installation of VCRs in patients’ rooms.

* American Diabetes Assn.’s “Scintillating Sixth Caper” on April 20 at the Beverly Hilton netted almost $380,000 for research and support programs. Joyce Black and Elaine Binder Robinson were co-chairs.

* Los Angeles Shanti Foundation’s May 2 screening of “Our Sons,” hosted by co-stars Julie Andrews and Ann-Margret and producer Robert Greenwald, netted more than $20,000. Proceeds will provide ongoing emotional support and education to those affected by life-threatening illnesses, including AIDS.

* Echo/Horizon School, established by Kent H. Landsberg and Carol Proctor, received $54,000, net proceeds from an April 27 bowling event. The school is a national model for the mainstreaming of hearing-impaired children. The spring event was planned by the school’s parent association.

* Aman Folk Ensemble received $27,500 from the Ahmanson Foundation, Times Mirror Foundation and AT&T; to support the creation and production of its new program, “Music and Dance of North America.” The production will premiere in the fall.

* Hathaway Children’s Services received a $2,000 donation from Santa Anita Foundation to be used to renovate living units at Hathaway’s residential campus.
