* Quayles Abroad: Marilyn Quayle sipped sake with Buddhists monks and ate shrimp with sailors while her husband, Vice President Dan Quayle, met with Prime Minister Toshiki Kaifu on the first day of their trip to Japan. She later went to the U.S. naval base at Yokosuka and passed up the officers’ mess on the USS Fife to eat with the enlisted men and women. She goes to Bangladesh today to check the damage from the recent cyclone.

* Profile in Courage: Georgia Supreme Court Justice Charles Weltner will receive the second annual Profiles in Courage award at the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library next week. Weltner, 63, was selected for his refusal to “compromise with hate,” a spokeswoman said Monday. The foundation cited Weltner’s decision to quit Congress in 1966 rather than support fellow Democrat Lester Maddox, who ran for governor on a platform supporting racial segregation.

* Separate but . . . : Columnist William F. Buckley, speaking to new graduates of Grove City College in Pennsylvania, lamented the separatism he has noted at Vassar and Columbia universities. “It is perplexing that the general call to ecumenical understanding is resulting on some college campuses in the most obdurate separatism since the 16th Century,” Buckley said Saturday. He referred to graduation ceremonies last week when Vassar’s black students held a separate commencement and a group of Columbia students chanted at their ceremony.

* The Name Game: Life has been going well for Mark and Cindy Huggett of Kokomo since they moved to Indiana. So when it came time to pick a name for their baby girl, they named her Indy Anna Huggett. Indy, as she is referred to by the family, was born Dec. 22. Their 6-year-old daughter Loren suggested the name. “I just hope she doesn’t resent us for it,” Cindy Huggett said.
