City Will Take Border Airport Plan to Salinas
San Diego Mayor Maureen O’Connor and Councilman Ron Roberts will discuss a proposed binational airport on the U.S.-Mexico border with Mexico’s President Carlos Salinas de Gortari next Wednesday in Mexico City, O’Connor’s office announced Tuesday.
The “TwinPorts” proposal, developed by Roberts, calls for a 12,000-foot runway and terminals to be built on the U.S side of the border, next to Tijuana’s international airport.
“Clearly, there is interest at the highest levels of Mexican government,” Roberts said. “For the president to be willing to meet, even prior to any agreement, I think clearly signals there is an interest in working with San Diego.”
Besides the binational airport proposal, the officials are expected to discuss trade and border issues during the two-day trade mission. This will be Salinas’ first meeting with San Diego officials.
Among those accompanying Roberts and O’Connor on the trip will be County Supervisor Leon Williams; Anne Evans, president of the San Diego Convention & Visitors Bureau; Cassie De Berge, an executive with First Interstate Bank; Mel Katz, president of the Greater San Diego Chamber of Commerce, and attorney Gilbert Partida.
