An American warship came under fire from two small boats in the central Persian Gulf on Tuesday and chased them off with machine-gun fire, the Defense Department announced.

The Defense Department said the LaSalle, a 14,650-ton command ship, reported being fired on by the two unidentified small boats.

The American vessel returned fire and after the exchange reported it had suffered no casualties and no damage. The two boats were last seen headed north at high speed, the Pentagon said.
