Music and Dance Reviews : Eastern India Program at Occidental Festival
A preponderance of Eastern Indian vocal music gave the Music Circle’s Festival ’91 a provocative twist Sunday at Thorne Hall, Occidental College. Coming in at about eight hours long, the annual event highlighted the contrasting traditions and talents of three exceptional singers performing ragas and folk songs with a small ensemble of players.
The mesmerizing Vijaya Jadhav, of the Jaipur tradition, demonstrated her unusually pure tone, control and stamina to great effect. An extended opening alap section held the listener spellbound as she emitted long, resonating tones, gradually picking up speed and adding different vocal techniques.
Expressive use of his hands, as well as his voice, made Arun Bhaduri’s convincing performance in the Rampur tradition a more flamboyant, dramatic affair. The more aggressive, youthful Rashid Khan represented the Sahaswan tradition potently.
A joyous virtuosic display between violinist V. G. Jog and tabla-player Zakir Hussain finished off the day impressively.
