Veterans Park Library Plan Isn’t Dead Yet
At a recent Redondo Beach Council meeting, Sal Princiotta, a professional artist and 20-year resident of Redondo Beach, submitted a proposal to keep the main library in Veterans Park, formerly called “Library Park,” and save the taxpayers over $2 million dollars!
Sal’s plan would have improved the existing facility to meet earthquake standards, expanded the library to the north to include reading rooms with an ocean view, plus a community meeting facility.
The mayor and council, as usual, turned a deaf ear to Mr. Princiotta’s proposal. They allowed him only six minutes to make his presentation and went on to approve constructing a new library on Pacific Coast Highway, next to the Civic Center, nearly a mile away.
This attitude tends to discourage residents from participating in city government. Sal Princiotta went to some expense and spent much time and effort in researching his proposal. We need the involvement of more people with his aggressiveness, creativity, intelligence and determination in city government. He has done his homework well and would be a formidable opponent in an open forum. Mr. Princiotta insists that Tuesday night’s decision by the council does not end this matter, and he is prepared to submit his case to the voters of Redondo Beach through the initiative process. Knowing him as I do, I can assure you that he will do just that!
