Supervisors OK 20% Cutbacks in Water Use
The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors on Wednesday approved mandatory 20% cutbacks in water use by the county’s 16 water districts.
Under the ordinance, no new meters and no temporary construction site meters will be installed until the county Department of Public Works determines that the districts’ water supply situation has improved. About 250,000 people receive their water from the districts, which include parts of Topanga Canyon, Marina del Rey and the Santa Clarita and Antelope valleys.
The water rationing ordinance also allows the county to increase the cuts by up to 50% if the drought continues, without further review by the supervisors. After June 10, violators will be fined $3 per 100 cubic feet of water for their first offense, $4 per 100 cubic feet for their second offense and $12 for subsequent violations.
