A Soviet airliner crashed and broke apart in heavy rain while trying to land at an airport outside Leningrad, killing 11 people and injuring 30 people. The Aeroflot Tupolev 154, with about 140 people aboard, broke into three pieces after its nose struck the runway at the city’s main Pulkovo Airport, airport officials said. Leningrad police reportedly said an engine apparently failed just before the landing. The jet was en route from the Black Sea resort of Sukhumi.
