A running team on its way across seven continents and 70 countries will arrive at the Oxnard Financial Plaza Hilton tonight for ceremonies that include the dedication of a peace tree and a speech by Oxnard Mayor Nao Takasugi.

The ceremonies begin at 8 p.m.

The U.S. leg of the Sri Chinmoy Oneness-Home Peace Run ’91 began in New York City on April 19 and will cover about 5,500 miles through all 50 states before returning to New York City in July.

The Sri Chinmoy running team will arrive in Ventura County at about 8 p.m., traveling up Pacific Coast Highway from the Malibu area. The relay is expected to arrive at the Hilton, 600 E. Esplanade Drive, about an hour later.

Hilton spokesman J. C. Cvetkovich said the public is welcome to run with the team in the vicinity of the hotel or may accompany the relay as it heads toward Ventura on Sunday. There is no entry fee.

Author and runner Sri Chinmoy founded the Olympic-style peace run in 1987, and this year’s relay is the largest and longest running event in history, organizers said. The run is sponsored by Chinmoy’s marathon team, an international running organization that emphasizes friendship and peace through sports.
