From Times Staff and Wire Reports

Efforts to check patients who received tissue or organs from an AIDS-infected donor have found 11 of the recipients test negative for the deadly virus, three test positive and three have died of AIDS, a transplant center said. LifeNet Transplant Services of Virginia Beach, Va., is working with the Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta and the Food and Drug Administration to track tissue distributed nationwide from the donor, William Norwood, 22, who was fatally shot during a 1985 gas station robbery. A total of 52 tissue samples from Norwood were distributed for transplant use, as well as four of his organs. Thirty-two patients who received tissue samples have been notified about the potential AIDS risk, although not all have been tested.
