Burrell, Cram Headline Field of Stars for Jenner Track and Field Meet Today

Top-ranked sprinter Leroy Burrell and mile world record-holder Steve Cram headline a stellar field in today’s Bruce Jenner Symantec track and field meet at San Jose City College.

Burrell is entered in the 200 meters, and Cram will join countryman Gary Staines of Great Britain plus Steve Scott and Doug Padilla in the 3,000 meters. The distance race is one of the designated events on the Mobil Grand Prix circuit, a series of 19 international meets. The Jenner meet is one of only two Grand Prix events in the United States.

Other athletes in the men’s events include Renaldo Nehemiah in the 110-meter hurdles, 1988 Olympic silver medalist Mike Powell in the long jump, Italian sprinter Pierfrancesco Pavoni in the 100 meters, Olympic champion Steve Lewis in the 400 meters and a relay team from the Soviet Union.

PattiSue Plumer, ranked No. 1 in the world last season at 3,000 and 5,000 meters, will run in the 1,500 meters. Also entered in the race is Mary Decker Slaney, who is competing again after recovering from injuries.

The women’s 3,000 field is headed by Wanda Panfil of Poland, who won the Boston Marathon in April; Shelly Steely of the United States, and Yvonne Mai of Germany.
