Ships to Head Home From Bangladesh
About 7,600 Marines and sailors who were detoured to Bangladesh for relief work on their way back from the Persian Gulf War will hoist anchor today and head home, a Pentagon spokesman said Tuesday.
Eight ships from Amphibious Ready Group 3 and the 5th Marine Expeditionary Brigade were sent in mid-May to provide helicopter transportation services to relief efforts following a devastating typhoon that killed a reported 138,000 Bangladeshi living in low-lying areas.
Pentagon spokesman Bob Hall said those ships will leave today, and, although they might make a stop in the Philippines, are eventually to return to their home ports at San Diego and Long Beach.
