Assassination of Rajiv Gandhi

Share

The Times deserves high marks for the comprehensive news coverage and thought-provoking editorial (“Impetus for War or for Healing?” May 22) on the gruesome murder of Rajiv Gandhi. After all has been said, the well-wishers of India would like to see dramatic constitutional changes in India granting provincial autonomy to its provinces as enjoyed by the states in the U.S. The parliamentary system of democracy has failed in India because of its vastness and multi-religious and multilingual communities living in educational and economic poverty. The right thing for India to do is to overcome its false pride and adopt the presidential form of government on the pattern of the U.S.

India has to make a new start to catch up with the economies of smaller countries making a giant economic impact. It has the capability to do it once it overcomes its outdated ideologies.
