Devereux Butcher, 84, founding editor of the National Parks Magazine from 1942 to 1957, author of several books on the national parks and an environmentalist credited with preventing construction of such projects as hydroelectric dams in the Dinosaur National Monument in Utah and another hotel at the Grand Canyon. Among his books was “Exploring Our National Parks and Monuments,” first published in 1947. It has undergone eight subsequent reprintings. From 1959 to 1962 he and his wife published the National Wildlands News, an environmental newspaper. Butcher also was an accomplished artist whose oils of national park landscapes have been exhibited across the country. In Gladwyn, Pa., on May 22.
