Share

U.S. Sen. John Seymour will begin distributing and accepting applications Saturday for nominations to the nation’s service academies.

Students interested in attending the U.S. Naval, Military, Air Force or Merchant Marine academies must be nominated by a U.S. senator, a member of the House of Representatives from their district, the vice president or the President.

Candidates sending nomination applications to Seymour must be unmarried with no children, U.S. citizens and California residents, and between age 17 and 22 as of July 1, 1992.

Nomination applications must be returned to Seymour by this Nov. 1. Candidates should request from their high school guidance counselors information on opening pre-candidate files with the academies they prefer.

Requests for nomination materials should be mailed to Seymour at 211 Main St., Suite 1702, San Francisco, Calif. 94105. For more information, call Heidi Kenniston, Seymour’s service academy nominations coordinator, at (415) 905-1666.

Though students found him “awesome,” one day as a high school principal didn’t make rock promoter Bill Graham want to take up that career permanently.

“Never. You have to have too much patience,” Graham said after recently playing principal for a day at a San Francisco high school. Graham visited classes as part of a program that puts business and community leaders in charge of school for a day. He casually talked with students about rock stars he knew and voiced concerns about the state of education.

After school, it was back to work for Graham, who announced that he will present music festivals at three ski resorts this summer. The locations are Mammoth (June 22-23), Telluride, Colo., (July 19-21) and Squaw Valley (Aug. 24-25).
