The Cheaper Course

Share

I read with interest Ron Harris’ excellent article, “A Generation of Innocents Carries Drug Abuse Scars,” (May 14). His findings were horrifying, to say the least.

Since the first of the year here in Orange County, there have been more than 50 babies taken into protective custody because they were born drug- or alcohol-addicted. In addition to these child abuse victims, there have been an average of 1,400 families reported to county authorities for suspected child abuse each month since the start of this year.

The message we must deliver to our representatives in Sacramento and Santa Ana is that tax dollars must be spent now on prevention. The cost of prevention when it comes to the addiction-abuse cycle is going to be far cheaper than the costs of dealing with this burgeoning population of victims when they become adults.
