BLAST OFF: For 11 years UCI physiology prof Ken Baldwin has been trying to launch his experiment on the effects of zero gravity on muscles. On Saturday, it will finally take off aboard the Columbia space shuttle. . . . Thirty rats will spend time on board, and upon their return Baldwin will study the effects of space on “every organ system of the body from the brain down.” . . . Baldwin’s application was approved by NASA in 1980, but the Challenger disaster in 1985 and other projects delayed it.
