Deep-Six Toilets

While I applaud the concept of building artificial reefs to provide additional habitat for marine life along our coast, I feel that we may be missing the boat by using quarry rock for this purpose (“State Building Reef for Fish Off Carlsbad,” May 24).

Why not use materials like the old water-hog toilets that many of us are replacing and concrete foundations that are discarded when old buildings are demolished. Old toilets, because of their shape, would make excellent habitats for fish and lobsters. The rough surface of foundation materials would provide a superior substrate upon which aquatic plants and animals could attach themselves. As a bonus, the life of our landfills would also be extended.
