Prop. 13
Those who defend Proposition 13 on the basis of “fairness,” not equality, have reached a new upper level of illogical thinking.
Reader Douglas Dunn (Letters, May 5) believes he is entitled to have a fixed, predictable amount of property taxes. The government, of course, is not expected to have to contend with not only a rising price level but the constant need for more funds to deal with society’s growing complexity.
Can Dunn get matching household costs by having the insurance company freeze premiums, the electrician, plumber, gardener, housekeeper, etc., freeze their initial fees (plus a maximum increase of 2% per year, of course) for all the years he may own his house? Can he get Chevron and Mobil to freeze gasoline prices for him in the year he buys his car, never mind that the cost of oil and labor may keep rising?
If Dunn could accomplish this, perhaps Proposition 13 would make sense.
