Defending champion Brad Kearns of Cool, Calif., held off Brett Rose of Laguna Beach and Greg Welch to win the men’s pro division of the Orange County Performing Arts Center Triathlon at Mission Viejo.

Kearns finished the 1,500-meter swim, 40-kilometer bicycle race and 10-kilometer run in 1 hour 49 minutes 39 seconds to win $2,000. He overcame a 90-second Rose lead going into the running stage.

Karen Smyers of Medford, Mass., dethroned four-time and defending champion Colleen Cannon of Nederland, Colo, winning the women’s division in 2:02:38.
