Gulp!: Marilyn Quayle says she’s not worried about the quality of drinking water at the vice president’s residence in Washington. “We don’t drink bottled water,” the wife of Vice President Dan Quayle said in Winston-Salem, N.C. “We drink from the tap.” Water at the White House and former residences of President Bush and his wife, Barbara, is being tested for toxins because of the unusual coincidence that the Bushes developed Graves’ disease. The Bushes lived in the vice presidential mansion when Bush was vice president.

Don’t Drink and Pedal: The 18-year-old son of Polish President Lech Walesa may be getting some training wheels after being charged with drunk biking. Przemyslaw Walesa’s blood-alcohol level was well over the legal limit when he was arrested while riding his bicycle in his hometown of Gdansk. A presidential spokesman said Lech Walesa “was not happy about the incident” and realized it was conduct deserving a reprimand. If convicted, young Walesa could face two months in jail or a $90 fine.

Boss Upstaged: So much for the expensive communications systems on those government planes White House Chief of Staff John H. Sununu must fly on so he can be in constant touch with the White House. Sununu recently fumbled through faulty connections and high static between his high-flying Gulfstream III and government officials on the ground. While Sununu floundered, a staff aide opened his briefcase and took out his own inexpensive cellular telephone and touched someone static-free.

Thanks: Queen Noor of Jordan stopped by the Christian Children’s Fund in Richmond, Va., to thank workers for flying emergency supplies and money to refugees in her country. “We’re very appreciative,” the American-born queen said. Jordan is flooded with war refugees, including about 50,000 children who have crowded the school system.
