General Atomics Buys Chevron Uranium Mines: The San Diego-based research and development company, which specializes in nuclear energy, is purchasing all of Chevron’s ore deposits for an undisclosed price. They include a Mt. Taylor, N.M., mine that contains 120 billion pounds of uranium ore, the largest U.S. deposit. The company, which manufactures small nuclear reactors for the research market, said it is acquiring the mines so it will be in position to take advantage of an increase in demand for nuclear energy. In 1988, General Atomics bought Oklahoma-based Sequoyah Fuels, one of two U.S. uranium conversion companies.
