A military court Tuesday sentenced a 19-year-old Jordanian soldier to 28 years on charges that he attempted to kill Israeli troops after infiltrating from Jordan.

The court sentenced Raeed Kader Ibrahim Auwad after he pleaded guilty to firing on Israeli soldiers along the Jordan River last Aug. 19.

The bullets failed to hit any soldiers. However the court’s chief judge, Lt. Col. Aharon Alpern, said the lengthy sentence was necessary as a warning to potential infiltrators.

The court said that Auwad, who did not belong to any guerrilla group, crossed the Jordan River with another soldier. Both carried automatic weapons and 14 magazines of ammunition.

The other soldier was killed in a fall from a cliff as he and Auwad tried to escape back across the river, the court said.
