Chinese authorities maintained tight security for a second day Tuesday on the anniversary of the crackdown two years ago on the pro-democracy movement, appearing to have subdued all but scattered symbolic gestures of defiance.

Students at Beijing University smashed a small number of glass bottles on campus near midnight in the second such incident in as many days, a sign of anti-government protest, witnesses said.

But after a generally quiet night Monday, the capital appeared more relaxed Tuesday. Large numbers of plainclothes police still conspicuously patrolled the university district.
