Right-hander Ed Whitson became the sixth San Diego Padre pitcher to be placed on the disabled list this season. Whitson, who has had soreness in his throwing elbow, was placed on the 15-day list retroactive to May 27. The Padres filled the roster spot by purchasing the contract of catcher Brian Dorsett from triple-A Las Vegas.

The New York Yankees placed right-hander Pascual Perez on the 15-day disabled list and called up rookie pitcher Jeff Johnson from Columbus. Perez made his fourth start of the season Friday night against Milwaukee and left after making five pitches because of stiffness in his right shoulder. . . . The San Francisco Giants said outfielder Kevin Mitchell will be sidelined for at least four weeks after arthroscopic knee surgery.

Frank Robinson, fired last month as manager of the Baltimore Orioles, will be back with the team Monday as an assistant general manager. The Orioles said Robinson will be involved in trades and acquisitions, planning the team’s new Camden Yards stadium and Florida training facilities and other unspecified duties. . . . The Cincinnati Reds activated shortstop Barry Larkin and second baseman Bill Doran from the disabled list. The Reds placed right-hander Scott Scudder on the disabled list because of a strained left rib cage and assigned first baseman Reggie Jefferson to the minor leagues.
