* Hungry Audience: Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.) hadn’t seen anything like it in a long time. Audrey Hepburn testified Tuesday before a Senate subcommittee on hunger in some parts of Africa, and people crowded the room to see the willowy actress. Subcommittee chair Leahy normally turns down celebrities who ask to testify because they are just lending their names but, he said, Hepburn really works at her job as goodwill ambassador for the U.N. Children’s Fund.

* Call Inspector Clouseau: The French Consul General for Texas has been prowling the streets of Houston’s ritziest neighborhood and snatching bags of trash. While rumors flew of intrigue and industrial espionage and the FBI was called in, Bernard Guillet said Tuesday he was only picking up bags of leaves and grass clippings to help fill a swimming pool hole at his consular residence. Some law enforcement officials apparently were skeptical, and investigations continued.

* Back in the Swing: Banged-up Prince William is out of the hospital. The 8-year-old, second in line to the British throne, went home to recuperate after a minor operation Monday to correct a depressed skull fracture he suffered when accidentally hit with a golf club at school.

* His Next Campaign?: One of the most recognizable personalities in the country today is Gen. H. Norman Schwarzkopf, and the Miss America pageant people are after him to sit in judgment at the Sept. 14 contest in Atlantic City. He hasn’t yet decided whether to accept their invitation.
