SIMI VALLEY : Panel Rejects Police Firing Range Plan
A proposal to build a shooting range for the Simi Valley Police Department was rejected Thursday night by the city’s Planning Commission.
Citing concerns about possible noise and safety problems, the Planning Commission unanimously rejected the proposed range, which was to be located about 1,800 feet north of Tierra Rejada Road and about 3,000 feet west of Llevarancho Road.
City staff and police have conducted several noise tests at the proposed site on the west side of Simi Valley, City Planning Manager Wolf Ascher said.
According to a city report, the closest residence to the proposed range is about 235 feet away and separated by a 50-foot-high ridge.
Simi Valley Police Sgt. Bob Gardner said the range was too far away from houses to be dangerous or noisy.
But neighbors who live near the proposed shooting range said the noise would disturb them and they were worried about ricocheting bullets.
Police officials did not say whether the proposal will be appealed to the City Council.
