Singing the Praises of Reed Students

Share

Events involving past and present students of Walter Reed Junior High in North Hollywood have brought shock, horror and disbelief to the student body as well as the community. The killing of a former Reed student at Millikan Junior High was followed within days by the vandalism at Colfax Avenue Elementary School by three Reed students.

Unnoticed and unreported, there was another significant event involving Reed students over the Memorial Day weekend.

Over 100 students, the Reed senior orchestra and the Reed choir, chartered buses and spent the weekend in San Diego to compete in a music festival at their own expense, the only junior high among 16 high schools competing.

Under the direction of Yolanda Gardea-Matsmune and Dana Matcham, the Reed students received the highest score in the orchestra division. The judge praised the students for their dedication and the skill they exhibited for their youth and experience, expressing hope they would continue their training and nurture their talents.

The achievement is of great significance because most had little or no formal musical training before attending Reed.

During their three-day stay in San Diego, the students conducted themselves in a responsible, mature manner, bringing honor not only to themselves, but to the entire student body, faculty and community.

Way to go, guys!
