OXNARD : Council to Vote on $64-Million Budget
After months of searching for ways to cut corners, the Oxnard City Council is scheduled today to approve a $64-million budget, which includes about $5.3 million in cuts, for fiscal year 1991-92.
The council will also consider a $64-million budget for 1992-93 at today’s hearing to be held at City Hall at 1:30 p.m.
Faced with a growing operating deficit fueled by the recession, city officials have labored through months of study sessions to identify the cuts.
They include scaling back the operating hours of the city library once it opens, closing the Colonia swimming pool this summer and shutting down restrooms in public parks on weekdays.
About 70 positions have been earmarked for elimination over the next two years, but city officials have said they hope to avoid layoffs.
Despite the cuts, the council will have to borrow about $1.5 million from its $7.1-million reserve fund to balance its books, city officials estimate.
