COSTA MESA : Smoking Is Banned in All City Buildings

Share

The City Council has approved a ban on smoking in city buildings but reserved the right to exempt certain areas or buildings in the future.

The council initially banned smoking at the Neighborhood Community Center, 1845 Park Ave., as a means of cutting maintenance costs there. Council members later asked the city staff to look into the possibility of banning smoking in all city-owned and -run buildings.

Council members said they were concerned about the higher cost of maintenance for a building that allows smoking and about the health of city employees.

The ordinance allows the council to pass resolutions permitting smoking in individual public buildings.

The ban does not apply to any multifamily residential buildings that may be built for seniors in the future.
