4 of 8 Charges Dropped in War Crimes Case

OTTAWA —
Canada dropped four of eight charges against a man alleged to have murdered 490 Jews and Poles during World War II because a key witness in the case died, a Justice Department official said Monday.
Retired carpenter Michael Pawlowski, 74, was first charged in 1989 in connection with the deaths of 490 people near the Soviet city of Minsk.
The four dropped charges related to allegations that Pawlowski murdered about 80 Poles in 1942 and also tracked down and murdered eight Jews.
