‘Earn’ Is Wrong Word for Those Big Salaries

There is something The Times could do, as a symbolic gesture, about the unjustifiable executive salaries reported in a recent series of articles, “Sky Is No Limit for Executive Pay (May 26).
The paper could make it a matter of editorial policy never to use the word “earn” in reference to these million-dollar-plus salaries.
Simply say that Mr. Smith “was paid” or “received a salary of” but never, ever that he “earned” some incredible sum of money.
