World IN BRIEF : SRI LANKA : Scores Reported Slain by Troops

Senior government officials visited eastern Sri Lanka to investigate a reported massacre by army troops. The troops reportedly went on a rampage after two soldiers died in a land mine blast, shooting, hacking and beating minority Tamils. The number reported killed ranged from 52, the military’s figure, to more than 150 given by a member of Parliament from Batticaloa, near the two villages attacked. President Ranasinghe Premadasa expressed shock and sorrow at the killings.
